Who am I?
Hi, I’m Monica! I was born and raised in New Jersey and earned my Bachelor’s (English) and Master’s (Education Administration) degrees from Boston College. Upon graduation, I participated in Americorps and served as a fifth-grade teacher in Arizona. After that, I moved to the MidWest, fell in love with Lake Michigan, and have lived here ever since. I earned my PhD in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) from Michigan State in 2010.

Prior to starting Sheldrake Consulting, I worked in college administration for 18 years. I advised students and groups, supervised professional staff, and managed a federal grant. I loved it, but always felt a pull towards something…else.

I saw too many people underselling their skills and experience and I wanted to help them share their stories and level up. I finally figured out that coaching is what I had been doing my whole career and that I could do it full-time. Sheldrake Consulting, LLC officially launched in 2015. I felt lonely and scared when I was struggling to figure out my next steps and needed someone to care, listen, and provide direction and clarity. I try to be that coach for others.

I am proud to be a small business owner. I even have a corner office with windows and 2 office-mates, our cats Willy and Violet. They’re cute, but they snore.

My husband and I live in Okemos, Michigan with our two amazing sons. They’re involved in theater, orchestra, soccer, Fortnite, Minecraft and eating. So much eating! In our “free” time we go to our cottage in Pentwater, our favorite place in the Mitten. Our oldest son is a childhood cancer survivor; at 3 years old, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. During that trying time in our lives, I learned a lot about the state of research funding for kids- not enough! I am not afraid to speak up, shave my head (three times!), or write letters to our elected officials to raise awareness and funds for research. I am passionate about service, social justice, and empowering people and communities with the tools they need to advocate for positive change.

Other important vitals: I love to read, preferably while sitting at the beach. I drink lots of coffee, with almond milk and no sugar. My MBTI type is INFJ. I’m a Taurus and loud Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Eagles fan.
